The Early Polus

There was no hierarchy among the major offices, although many Polus did have a principal office who was regarded as the chief administrator. In most Polus, by the mid 7th century BC, term of office was limited to a single year, and could not be held again until a stipulated number of years had passed. Many Polus though, especially the smaller ones, were governed by small boards of magistrates who divided the functions of government among themselves without stipulating the specific duties. Usually the title of Vasylaeus was reserved for an annual magistrate, whose responsibilities varied between Polus.
