The author and her family moved to the netherlands when their children were eight and ten years old. They found that they thrived in a walkable, traffic-free city with no more than one lane of road for them to cross. The authors say there are many benefits to this kind of freedom - but it must be re-designed by our cities so kids can move around without supervision.
