The Unseeing of a Mystery Plot
The book reads more like a mystery than a fantasy. The setting is not foregrounded because it's taken for granted by the protagonist. Although it's incredibly important, it's not dwelt on except as it becomes relevant for the plot. And I think that the problem is we sometimes stress taboos at the expense of stressing the way we all cheat and duck and dive around taboos.
