The White Elephant

Horatio Nelson's famous quip, "I really do not see the signal," refers to his superior officer telling him to withdraw from a battle. The phrase seems to come from the 17th century in Thailand where Thai kings would give white elephants as gifts to those who would insult them. White elephants are considered sacred in Southeast Asia but they're very expensive and difficult for upkeep.
