We started with something that has a very small set of genes and then to go in and try to even whittle those away further. We used a technique that was developed as part of this effort called transposon bombardment. From that information, we figured out the genes that are essential for life and rapid growth. And based on that, we synthesized a complete genome starting from basically from four bottles of chemicals.
