In the 1980s, some researchers at IBM said that same thing could be used for machine translation. The idea was basically that French speaker actually said something in English, but it came out garbled. And then you have a separate thing called a language model that chooses among those possible outputs to say, well, this is the one that actually looks like English if we're doing English.

Paris Marx is joined by Emily M. Bender to discuss what it means to say that ChatGPT is a “stochastic parrot,” why Elon Musk is calling to pause AI development, and how the tech industry uses language to trick us into buying its narratives about technology.
