Putin is in many ways a very old-fashioned nationalist. He's really a 19th century geopolitician. And his notion of Russia as a great power was right from the beginning inextricably linked with war fighting capability. The interesting thing is that despite all the macho posturing Putin ultimately was always a very cautious war monger.
