The Bridges of Rome by Flaminius Paladio
Paladio is most strongly drawing on the authority of classical texts, broadly. He quotes in latin a huge trunk of julius caesar's commentary. And then he produces a visual reconstruction of said bridge. The idea is they're built as portal frames with breaker thing at one end to stop logs f floating down and hitting it,. But basically, the squares are yer, like these big spaces. They've all got like a double decker portico around the side.
