I think the Industrial Revolution had a lot to do with that. People as early as 1717 were starting to notice the complete carnage that industrialism was inflicting on the natural world. You went up into the midlands and even by the latter part of the 18th century and there was desolation. And yes, I think that inspired a lot of the early droids. It inspires a lot of us now.
