Damon takes us through the history of liberation theology arising from the class struggles in South America in the mid 20th century, detailing the intersections between dissident elements in the church and Marxist revolutionary militants in places such as Nicaragua, Brazil, and Cuba. We discussed the commonalities between socialist and Christian thought, how to read Jesus as a political tactician and organizer against the Roman Empire, the challenges that radical religion faces from its own institutions, and the lines of escape that lie in wait for a Christianity that rises up from below.
