English borrows words from other languages. Shakespeare is thought to have invented about one thousand 700 words, many of which are in common use today. Most latin words were added to english well after the romans had left britain. Words like pajama and chutney come from india, safari, from the arabic and catch up from hokien - a language spoken in modern day southeast china.
