The Role of Quarantine in the Prevention of Yellow Fever
I argue that quarantine worked in two respects based on everything we know today about how yellow fever spreads. It reduced the number of opportunities for those elements to all be in the same place at the same time. The fact that the city was expressing its collective determination to survive and to thrive and to grow in the face of this threat was critical to the, to the survival of quarantine as an institution.
