The Athenian Agora
excavations have revealed what is thought to be the Athenian mint for their bronze coins. It has been identified due to its stone walls, and also parts of furnaces, water basins, drains,. Also some of the finds include bronze rods and flans - discs that were cut off from rod-like objects in a similar way to today's pennies. So far there is no evidence that silver or gold coins were minted there, so they were presumably minted somewhere else.
