The History of Greek Sculpture
Since bronze had a significant scrap value, very few original bronzes have survived. Many copies of the Roman period are marble versions of works that were originally in bronze. Limestone was used quite often in the Archaic period but thereafter except in areas of Italy and Sicily that had no local marble of their own. Chryselifantine sculptures used for temple cult images and luxury works used gold, ivory, gems and other materials too. Naturally like bronze these two would have been valuable commodities to be stripped in later times.
