The Importance of Competition in the Market Economy

For complex processes to operate, numerous interconnected plans must be made simultaneously by constituents with unique and partial sets of knowledge. This creates a degree of contention between plans, where the coordination is occurring after the fact. Such plurality stands in contrast to nearly a century of reform seeking to unify decision-making. The real utility of competition is in discovering the decision-makers' givens, or what the product should look like, and how it should be priced. Some could only succeed if others fail.
