"i wanted to be marianne," she says of her childhood dream. "There was a sense that there was a family unit functioning together, and we weren't all autonomous beings who touched down at home periodically" Her dad made them go on two-week vacation up to maine every summer with their four kids; they hated it but now appreciate how much he loved them. She wishes for more autonomy in the family: "It doesn't work like that."
