I feared for the future of the country after the referendum decision. We were punching, to use a Hackney-Doll phrase, punching well above our weight. Before we took that decision, everything was going our way. The stability of our political institutions and the reliable boringness of what it is to be British now lie in tatters. And as everybody in this room knows, you know, you build a reputation painstakingly over years, decades, and then you lose it like that if you get it wrong.
