Futures markets have been going on for quite hundreds of years, why Ag and why Chicago? Well, when the futures markets developed it reflected the agricultural nature of the United States economy. The two biggest competing transshipment points in the Midwest at that point in time were Chicago and St. Louis. It wasn't until almost really more than a hundred years later before they broke out of their agricultural roots and started trading things like interest rates and currencies.
