Eretrea was a difficult place then, and it remains still an autocratic regime. If he'd stayed, simon would have been conscripted into the military and become a soldier. Simon found a job in israel as a street cleaner, paid in cash. It wasn't exactly the education he'd hoped for, but he lived there for six years on a visa he had to renew every three months until one day he wasn't able.
