Learning Machine Learning on Your Own?

If you want to learn multiple domains in depth, you would have to take it upon yourself. I see Stephen Wilfram as a great example of somebody who robustly teaches themselves new fields very quickly and then uses them in Wilfram Alpha. You certainly can get a lot out of learning from other people and using them to give you the motivation you need that you would ordinarily have gotten from school or from a career.
