The Macedonian Warrior Nobility, the Mythic Heroes of Homer's Iliad

In their own eyes, at least, the macedonian warrior nobility, these companions, they were more like the mythic heroes of yore. The nobles liked to hear the great poems and stories at their grand feasts, but they had people to read or sing these things for them. So philip needed other smart people who could write, people who understood how these democratic greeks thought and talked. And so sitting in that little arena in cardea, as i imagine it, philip turns to eumenes senior and says, my friend, i believe i have a job for your son. He was jumping onto a moving train.
