The Importance of Fire for Indigenous Land Management

In Shawnee territory, 3000 years of routine burning plants start to become pyro adapted. There's certain plants that can only grow in the wake of fire. Burning was and is so important to Native people that within our lunar calendars, there's a moon, a full moon that demarcates, it's time to burn the grasses. And so that's how important it was to burn every year.
