For a medieval mind, for example, there's two ascetic saints named Saint Kediel who lived in Russia. When you show that to a 21st century person says, oh, well, clearly the 17th century writer looked at the model of the 14th century and copied it. A medieval person would have been something like, well, of course they're the same. Since they're named Kediel, there's something ineffable about the choosing of that name which reflects a certain kind of storytelling then reflected in actual real life.
