The First Five-Year Plan for the Soviet Union

The first five-year plan was designed to make the Soviet Union an industrial powerhouse. It would focus resources and manpower on a number of goals, but there were challenges along the way. This put additional strain on the economy, forcing a lower standard of living among its people. The plans also had devastating consequences for some groups within Soviet society.
