The New Deal and the Great Depression
The great depression and personality of f d r put the republican party in a very undesirable position for much of the 19 thirties, really reduced it to almost a rump. It was during this time when we see conservatism defineg itself in opposition to roosevelt's enormous expansion of the reach and the complexity of the federal government. So we see that continuing theme. But it was not necessarily a popular position at all.
