The Brahmo Samaj and the Bengal Renaissance
The Brahmo Samaj was one of the most powerful and important social and religious reform organisations to come out of the Bengal Renaissance. It was founded in the 1820s by the great Renaissance luminary Raman Rai who argued that Hinduism had initially been a monotheistic faith which should be interpreted rationally. Dabendranat Tagore, RabendranatTagore's father took over the movement in the 1840s and he really revitalised it. The Brahmos tried to tread a middle ground between those people in Bengal who wholeheartedly embraced the West and those who very rigorously defended what they saw to be the traditions of India and Bengal.
