The author capelli has a very clear point of view and knows what's happening. So if we were to say the resolution of this story is that the lieutenant gets away and justice is never served, we have to believe some things about capelli that don't match up with how with our experience of him as an author. The fact that he woul even choose to tell thi story is also very telling. Because why would you tell a story about a witness? He doesn't tell a stories about any of the other witnesses who didn't testify. So why would yo tell a storyabout this one, unless something changed for us throughout the experience?"
