The film is based on a novel by William Saroyan American author called The Laughing Matter. It's very much set in California and the setting was clear so to speak. At the same time I knew that I wanted to make a Russian film in the Russian language. So there was a dilemma whether to transfer this American story into Russia or to take Russian actors to Fresno. In the end we decided to film it in Russian. There is another small thing. Engagement rings of our characters. One critic noticed that the rings are on their right hand.
