The Complexity of Photon Interactions
When you pack a lot of atoms together, the rules about what happens to those electrons now change. If they're the right energy, it gets absorbed and then it can get reemitted. In this case, for transparency, it's more about whether there's an interaction. So from the point of view of the electron, what happens is that you no longer really belonging to one nucleus.
