The Origins of Folklore
In 1850 notes and queries advertised preparations for immediate publication of a collection entitled The Folklore of England. That work never appeared, but the national focus was carried into the first prospectus of the folklore society in 1878. Tom's himself saw British mythology in Scandinavian and Germanic terms. He points to a dominant founding idea of the discipline that came under considerable theoretical scrutiny throughout the period. But it has a place in our history because for most of the pioneering generation of folklorists, folklore was something that survived in rural communities.
