Increasing End-Expertory Lung Volumes on a Mechanical Ventilator
The expiratory time constant reading on a mechanical ventilator can be helpful to understand how your ventilation strategy is going. In this patient who already has a pretty low respiratory rate, you might want to try decreasing their tidal volumes or increase their inspiratory flow rate in order to allow for a longer exhalation time. Elevated end-expertory lung volumes can decrease lung perfusion and decrease venous return to the right side of the heart.
