The Importance of Normative Reason

There's an adorable anecdote in the book where I think they're at a cocktail party and somebody sees Parfett talking to a woman who they know really has no interest in or knowledge of philosophy. And he says, well, apparently Bernard Williams doesn't understand the difference between him in external external reason or something like that. It's objectively true to say of people that rather often they don't know what they're missing. They're sufficiently selfish or sufficiently unaware of what is adjacently possible for them in moral terms. But it's still true to say that a better life is conceivable and would be reached by going left where where's they're going right.
