Anthony Fauci, then a member of the president's coronavirus task force was asked to question toward the end of a White House press briefing. The Wuhan Institute of Virology was known for doing high-risk virology research studying manipulating coronaviruses and Fauci had funded such research at the WIV. A month just before that paper was published, Christiane Anderson, one of the papers authors wrote a slack message to his colleagues saying, quote, the lab escape version of this is so friggin likely to have happened.
