In addition to fear that the evil communists were going to very soon take over the world, people lived with a really intense and realistic fear of nuclear annihilation. So there's a culture of fear around those two things, the possibility of our life as we know it ending. And there was also, many thoughtful people, a lingering horror at um the causes and the costs of the war. Peel is an interesting person because he addresses this culture of idividual achievement that is driven by fear With a language that comes almost straight out of the propaganda campaigns that we use to encourage people to buy bonds and participate in the war effort.
