The Paradox of the Bicameral Mind
There's an idea that humans alone can't really access some of those realms of gnosis and then you need some kind of assistance whether it's a plant or a drug or music. I think the church had a lot to do with talking people out of listening to their inner voice. Some spiritual concepts have an idea that maybe we have like a synthesis with some other organism or sentience or consciousness which happens a lot biologically right even in ourselves.
