Markfelt self disclosed his deep throat in the year two thousand five. He was encouraged by his family to do so late in his life. So he was leaking information to undercut his rivals inside the fbi, inside the fBI. This is an interpretation that is persuasive, in my view, and it's the subject of a of abo length treatment called leak.
