How to Think Like a Roman Emperor: Insights with Donald Robertson

The Stoic Handbook by Jon Brooks

CHAPTER

The Life and Times of Marcus Aurelius

Marcus Aurelius came from a very privileged background but there seems to have been a bit of a clash between his family and the life at court particularly under Hadrian. Marcus's mother was an educated woman and it's implied by Marcus that she was friends with a guy called Ginnyis Rusticus who went on to become Marcus's main stoic teacher so we could speculate it may be that it was partly Marcus's mother who pointed him in the direction of stoicism. He started off as this boy who had lost his father being brought up by a very wealthy Roman matriarch  and his mother under a brick and tile factory outside Rome.
