The Origin of the Earth's Atmosphere

All the material that's in the atmosphere arrived as part of the materials that accreted to form the Earth. The only quantitatively important source of oxygen for the atmosphere was actually photosynthesis. There are chemical reasons for thinking that meteorites are doing the heavy lifting. A little bit may have come from comets, which are mostly ice.
