The idea that the only moral ties that matter are ones that I have willingly incurred through an act of will doesn't enable us to make sense of a wide range of moral and political obligations. If can't concope with that is there a philosophical approach that's in some way superior to Kant's in this respect? Well it depends how one understands community and individual identity, he says. In many ways Hegel looked back even further to the ancients and in particular to Aristotle because we can't live a full human life except as members of a political community as members of the polis.
