The Importance of Maintaining Awareness of Mara
The Buddha touched the earth just before his enlightenment in response to Mara's challenge. The earth goddess appeared and witnessed that the Buddha had indeed practiced over many lifetimes and certainly in his present lifetime. Attainment of enlightenment is then a gradual process, one of repeatedly overcoming Mara, which represents obstacles and hindrances.
