Is the 30 Meter Telescope a Good Idea?

The Magellan telescope is going to be 30 feet across, almost. It's made of seven different segments and each segment is like a huge mirror. Each one is eight point four meters across, right? That's mine, blowingly large. But also, they do rely on government funding, which does rely on the whims of whoever is in charge. And if you don't care about human rights, then it's all poside.
