Remote Procedure Calls - What Are They and How Do They Work?

Remote procedure calls are used to connect together lots of machines that are sharing work. They don't show up much if you just have one computer, or you have a small number of computers that don't act. A search can be incredibly useful for having something like a web search at gugle where the computer that gets a search from a user immediately fans it out to a hundred other machines using remote procedure calls.
