Scientology

In 1953 Elrond Hubbard suggested turning their science self-help empire into a religion. Scientology wouldn't qualify as a religion for the purposes of tax exemption until 1993. This is the point at which Hubbard started presenting himself to the world as a bona fide holy man. Apostates were called squirrels and should be sued out of existence.
