John Garth: I think talking to Christopher by letter helped to shape that book of the Lord of the Rings in particular, both through criticisms of it, critiques of it, and because Christopher sent his father back to the First World War. So Tolkien at one point in his letter says that if anyone in my book is like me, it's Faramere, except I wasn't a good officer.
