The Desire for Voice in the Contemporary World

This book is the outcome of where it's based on ethnographic field work that I did for my dissertation project. And during my time in the field, I worked with a group of Kurdish female singers called Dengbej in Kurdish who had just started organizing themselves to set up a civil society organization. Most of them had actually quite horrific stories to tell about both political and gendered forms of violence that they had experienced when trying to raise their voices in public. The book is really an attempt to understand and also honor that immense desire for voice on the part of the women that I encountered during my field work.
