A Brief History of Crete
Archaeologists have found two and three-story houses indicating the existence of well-off nobility who are probably part of the administrative and commercial sectors. Evidence of a class society shows up archaeologically as the architecture and finds at Nossos give us a good idea of the enormous luxury enjoyed by the royal family. A major difference though is that Bronze Age Crete lacked the huge temple complexes of the Near East. Rather, the palaces themselves appear to have been the religious centers of society. This taken with other evidence has led some scholars to believe that Minoan kings ruled as priest kings like those in the Near East,.
