Is There a Strategic Justification for the Union?

It may be that the naval base at Fastlane has become a major reason for the union and some sort of perhaps enhanced defence relationship with Ireland. So I think we can't assume that the kind of justification that was the fundamental cause of the union has entirely gone away. The danger of unfriendly countries using bits of the British Isles as a launch pad against other parts hasn't changed much since 1910. Do you think unspoken among the English whether that's the rulers of England or the English people there is still a lingering sense that the union project are Scottish projects?
