The Reluctance of Latter-Day Saints to Participate in the Trial
Church leaders refused to participate in the trial of Joseph Smith's accused assassins. They feared reprisal from the anti-Mormon party. The case was decided with the selection of the jury, which included few Latter-day Saints. All five men were acquitted and it led to a fraught time for the church.
