The Degradation of Voodoo
In 1872, a New Orleans Times-Picayune reporter wrote that Marie LaVoe was presiding over an unexceptional dance party. He then went on to editorialize: "The voodoos are no more and their mysterious ceremonies have degenerated into a time of unrestrained license for the Negroes" The writer's statement is dripping with casual racism; he seems nostalgic for the old voodoo.
