Mike Birbiglia: "I think of like performing comedy as like stripping or something where it's like, I'd like to do it for other people. Coincidentally, that's also how I would feel if I had to strip" He says he uses a ton of fake names and doesn't run stuff by his family because they don't even really want him to be a comedian. The story behind the jokes is usually an amalgam of some kind with help from others in his life who have written their own lines.
